How do high or badly-fitting shoes cause back pain?

2010 Author: BackCare

Question

If we don't want to wear flats constantly, how can we reduce our chances of developing back pain?

For example, is there a 'safe' heel height; can we spot if shoes are well designed/balanced; are certain heel shapes more dangerous; should we alternate flats and heels daily?

Answer

High heels and ill-fitting shoes can contribute to back pain as they change the shape of the feet, whlch can cause muscular; postural and gait changes that can place the spine out of alignment and put pressure on the back resulting in pain.

Stlletto heels due to the smaller surface of the heel cause greater pressure on the feet and can have a greater effect on the back. Therefore it may be beneficlal to wear shoes with a thicker heel. Some shoes may also have padding and extra support which may make them more comfortable and therefore better for your back. For example some dancing shoes are more comfortable as they are made to be used during a lot of activity To reduce the risk of your shoes causing you back paln it is important not to wear hlgh heels at all times. Wear them only on special occasions and when you know you will not be on your feet all day Also varying the heights of your heels can be helpful; wear heels that are low or mldheight in the day and hlgher heels only on occasion. Also ensure your shoes fit correctly and are not too tight.
