Notice - Proposed changes to membership.
The trustees are proposing that we no longer have members with voting rights. With the changes that occur in the back pain arena they believe that, as an organisation, we will be able to respond faster and act more swiftly on behalf of BackCare and the people with back pain if the voting rights were contained within the Trustees. Taking major and important decisions at an annual meeting does not give BackCare the flexibility to be an independent voice within a challenging and diverse health sector.
Over the last five years we have had no more than 5 members attend the AGM (I apologise if you are one of the regular attendees) and only 2 in 2009 plus a small handful of proxy voters. It would seem that exercising voting rights has not been a priority for the vast majority of our members and this in itself makes the AGM a costly and complicated process. BackCare members would still have the ability to raise questions about the charity via the CEO who will present questions and comments to the Trustees and we will still be a patient representative body fighting on behalf of people with back pain. As you may be aware we have lowered the fees to reflect whether people are currently taking voting rights or not on renewal of membership.
Obviously everybody is able to apply to become a trustee and we have two vacancies at the moment - should you be interested in applying please let me know and I will send you the relevant paper work
