How to become a Helpline volunteer

Every year BackCare trains a new group of Helpline volunteers to complement the existing group. Read more about how you can become a BackCare Helpline volunteer.

The BackCare Helpline aims to provide listening, support and information to people experiencing back pain, and to their families and carers.  The Helpline responds to people by phone and email.  BackCare also has an online forum where people are able to share their experiences with others.  If you feel you would like to help we are currently looking for Helpline volunteers to join our team.
We are looking for people who have good communication and listening skills, are understanding, and non-judgmental.

What will I be doing?

  • Responding to people who contact BackCare’s phone and email Helpline, and people using the online forum.
  • Listening to a caller’s story.
  • Helping people establish their options.
  • Providing information from BackCare’s resources.
  • Giving information about other relevant organisations.
  • Talking through calls and emails at the end of a shift.
  • Taking part in supervision sessions and ongoing skills training, as necessary.

What shifts would I work?
Volunteers are required to undertake a minimum of one four hour shift per week.

What will training involve?
Training takes place over a number of weeks so that you have the opportunity to practice the skills you have learned and feel prepared for the helpline work.  The training consists of two days at a venue with our trainer and other new volunteers. Between these training days you will take part in a series of weekly conference calls where helpline skills are practiced.
More information and an application form can be obtained from the Helpline manager at BackCare.
