Spina bifida and running the London marathon
16 Apr 2009
Lauren Siepiela who was born with spina bifida champions the London marathon for BackCare.
BackCare, the charity for healthier backs, is proud to include Lauren Siepiela as one of their twenty-seven fundraising London marathon runners next weekend.
Lauren had been told that she would never walk again but has overcome adversity to look forward to competing in her first London Marathon.
Lauren said: “BackCare is a personal issue for me. I was born with Spina Bifida and also suffered a complicated spinal fusion surgery in 2004. My surgeons were surprised that I survived because the operation developed leaking spinal fluid in my body as well as three pulmonary embolisms in my lungs. I was told that I would never run competitively or participate in sports again. Determined to prove them wrong, I completed my first marathon last year in Dallas and I am looking forward to raising money for a cause that I care so deeply about.”
BackCare’s Chief Executive Sash Newman said: “At the charity we are privileged to have Lauren as one of our runners. We hope that her extreme circumstances will help highlight back care issues that are such a common occurrence is so many. Lauren’s extraordinary achievements will help us raise funds to enable us to continue our vital work.”
